PPP and PML-N have taken revenge on democracy by overthrowing the elected government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.-- Altaf Hussain
For 55 years, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muslim League have been playing a game of musical chairs with power, taking turns accommodating one another. Under the guise of democracy, the country has been subjected to the Bhutto and Sharif families—elites consisting of dictators and feudal lords. Asif Zardari and Bilawal’s famous slogan and policy have been that "Democracy is the best revenge." Yet, these self-proclaimed champions of democracy, the PPP and Muslim League, have taken ultimate revenge on democracy itself by overthrowing the elected government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and imposing Governor's Rule.
Following the tragic martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto, the PPP coined the slogan "Democracy is the best revenge" simply to fool the nation, making hollow claims of democratic struggle. They used Benazir Bhutto's name solely to seize power, while completely forgetting her blood. How can democracy ever function without the Constitution and the rule of law? When President Asif Zardari signed the presidential decree for the dismissal of an elected provincial government, the imposition of Governor's Rule, and emergency measures, did his hands not tremble even slightly? Did he not realize that after enforcing Governor's Rule, neither he nor Shehbaz Sharif would have any moral standing left to utter the word "democracy"?
Following the enforcement of Governor's Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, various conspiracy theories are emerging. Some people are claiming that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has cut a deal, and that his government was overthrown and he was arrested as a result of that arrangement. Accusations of a deal are being hurled at Sohail Afridi, yet not a shred of evidence has been presented. But if that really were the case, then who is left? Let this be clearly understood: the public never poured into the streets for any other individual; they only turned out to rallies, processions, and marches because of Imran Khan. People do not step out for anyone else besides their leader.
I have lived in London for 34 years. For 11 years, I have faced a complete ban on my writings, my speeches, and even the mere mention of my name in the media. Yet despite all these hardships, devoted followers of Altaf Hussain remain steadfast today—not just in Sindh, but across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir—standing by me and carrying on the movement. If you do not believe this, just lift the ban imposed on me and see for yourselves.
Even if one were to assume for a moment that Sohail Afridi made a deal, haven’t those who came before him done the same? Political parties are routinely fractured and weakened by poaching their members, but parties whose roots run deep within the masses can never be eradicated. To break the MQM, they created MQM-H, then the PSP, and later MQM-P. When none of those tactics worked, they forced them back together. Yet despite all these machinations and heavy state patronage, their rallies still fail to draw any substantial crowds. The people are still with Altaf Hussain and his MQM today.
I want to tell PTI workers that movements go through such severe trials and tribulations. Do not lose hope; just like the workers of MQM, keep unwavering faith in your leadership. Those who remain steadfast always emerge victorious.
Altaf Hussain.
