MQM CONVENER DR EHSAN SAYS ET CORRESPONDENT’S UNLAWFUL DETENTION, TORTURE ON HIM WORST OF STATE REPRESSIONS

“The incident is a complete portrayal of state repression, which does not even allow a working journalist to fulfill his assigned duty of covering the events.”

LONDON. January 22, 2018: MQM Coordination Committee Convener Dr Nadeem Ehsan has condemned the arrest and enforced disappearance of English daily Express Tribune correspondent Fawwad Hassan and said this is worst of state repressions.

In his statement, he said that that the correspondent Hassan had been on his official assignment which was to cover a condolence reference held at the University of Karachi under the aegis of Karachi University Teachers Society for slain MQM senior leader Prof. Dr Hassan Zafar Arif on Monday, Jan 21, 2018. However, the paramilitary Rangers had picked him from the venue of the condolence, took him to Rangers headquarters and while subjecting to torture warned him of serious repercussion incase he would again in life dare to cover such events.

Dr Ehsan said that, “The incident is a complete portrayal of state repression, which does not even allow a working journalist to fulfill his assigned duty of covering the events.”

In addition, Hassan’s arrest and torture on him has once again proven that the arresting and torturing paramilitary Rangers are the real assassins of Prof. Arif, added the MQM Convener Dr Ehsan.

The MQM Coordination Committee Convener while expressing complete solidarity with the affected of torture correspondent Mr. Hassan demanded the Prime Minister Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and federal interior minister Mr. Ahsan Iqbal to hold impartial and independent enquiry into the incident and take action against those who did torture him after taking him into custody quite unlawfully and without any lawful charge.

Dr Ehsan appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Saquib Nisar that since he has been taking suo motu on almost every matter whether small of big, he should also take notice of working journalists’ unlawful detention and torture on them.

He urged upon journalists’ associations and unions to raise their voices on this blatant state repression.
