PUBLIC INTEREST MOUNTS OVER REFERENDUM ON HUNGER STRIKE TILL DEATH OF ALTAF HUSSAIN, FOUNDER AND LEADER OF MUTTAHIDA QUAMI MOVEMENT (MQM)
Public, not only in Pakistan but all over the world, particularly Mohajirs have shown interest in the referendum over the decision of hunger strike till death of Mr Altaf Hussain, founder and leader of the MQM.
People in all parts of the world are practically reaching the polling stations to poll their vote in the referendum. Moreover, the special web site and internet lines have been established for electronic poll, which is also proving effective and beneficial and public response on it is widespread.
Public was receptive when the elected members of the Senate, National Assembly, Provincial Assembly belonging to the MQM surprised the public and the Establishment when they began distributing polling form to the public in the busy market places, shopping malls and major streets. However, the law enforcers brutally intervened to stop this democratic process. It imperative to note that the Government of Nawaz Sharif has clamped down all the democratic process in Sindh province and ruling Sindh through its political agent Syed Ghaus Ali Shah.
The distributing team reached other spots immediately whenever they were forcibly stopped by the Police and other law enforcers.
The MQM Co-ordination Committee announced that 9th. August 1999, the closing date fixed for Referendum has now been extended until the 13th. August 1999.
However, the Hunger Strike Camp of the MQM is overwhelmed with supporters and during a brief telephonic conversation of Mr Altaf Hussain, the crowd unequivocally chanted, "No, to the Hunger Strike till death".
