PAKISTAN: Appeal

'Extra-judicial Executions and Disappearances'

Dozens of MQM leaders, office bearers, workers and supporters have not been seen since June 1992, when they were arrested by the security forces from the urban centres of Sindh, southern province of Pakistan.

Scores of MQM leaders, office bearers, workers and supporters have been extra-judicially executed in the urban centres of Sindh since June 1992, when an Army Operation Clean-up was launched to physically eliminate the Mohajirs in general and MQM leaders, workers, supporters and their relatives in particular. In many cases these MQM leaders, workers, supporters and their family members have been arrested, taken from their homes and shot, their bodies later abandoned. These extra-judicial executions were later dubbed as "police encounter" by the Authorities. Others have mysteriously "disappeared" from the State custody.

Please write, calling for a prompt, independent and impartial inquiry into the arrest and subsequent "disappearance" of MQM leaders, workers, supporters and their family members. Urge the government to investigate all reports of "disappearances" and extra-judicial executions particularly in the urban centres of Sindh, southern province of Pakistan. Ask for the findings of these investigations to be made public and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

PAKISTAN

Policy of the Nawaz Sharif Government towards Mohajir Nation

SLAYING OF JUDICIARY IN PAKISTAN

WE DEMAND:

PAKISTAN:

WHERE DEMOCRACY IS SUPERSEDED BY AUTOCRACY

On 30th October 1998, the Government of Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan suspended the elected Provincial Assembly of Sindh and imposed the undemocratic "Governor Rule" in the province. Since then the Provincial Assembly remains ineffective. Elected representatives of the MQM with huge public mandate have been paralysed to carry out their constitutional duties.

Furthermore, three elected members of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, namely, Mr. Shoaib Ahmed Bukhari Advocate MPA, Mr. Wakeel Ahmed Jamali MPA and Mr. Afzal Anwar MPA belonging to the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) have been unlawfully arrested, brutally tortured and imprisoned for no legal reason at all.
