POLICE SHOOTS A YOUTH DURING PEACEFUL PUBLIC PROTEST IN HYDERABAD AND MQM HEAD OFFICE IN KARACHI UNDER SIEGE

Today, on 31 July 1999, Police in Hyderabad opened unprovoked firing on the protesters killing a youth and wounding score of protesters.
MQM has called for the protest against the illegal occupation of province of Sindh and denial of socio-economic rights of the permanent citizens of Sindh (Mohajirs & Sindhis) by the Federal Government dominated by Punjabi legislatures, bureaucracy, Establishment including Defence and the Presidency. It is pertinent of mention that the Judiciary has been tightly strangulated by the Nawaz Sharif Government and is fully subservient.
A spate of arrests of the Mohajirs in general and the MQM leaders, office bearers, workers, sympathisers and their relatives have continued with greater vengeance for the third day running. During the night long siege and search operations. Hundreds of Mohajirs and MQM workers have been arrested in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas and other cities of Sindh province, southern Pakistan. Similarly hundreds of Sindh have also been arrested. A brutal torture is being inflicted on the persons arrested by the Police in the State Police Stations, Prisons, Safe Houses and specially prepared Torture Cells.
The Police has apprehended the Buses coming from all over Sindh specially Nawabshah, Mirpur Khas and other areas to the Karachi Press Club to demonstrate their solidarity with the MQM strikers. The Police kidnapped scores of people who were travelling in those buses.
The Head Office of the MQM generally known as "Nine Zero" is under siege and no one is allowed to reach there and also to the Karachi Press Club. However, thousands of people have managed to reach the Karachi Press Club where the MQM Hunger Strikers have camped, despite State blockade and atrocities.
Today, apart from the male members of the hunger strikers, the following women supporters are also observing the hunger Strike opposite Karachi Press Club; Ms. Shakila Fatima, Ms. Safia Zahid and Ms. Shahida Nisar.
The Co-ordination Committee of the MQM has announced to re-start the hunger strike opposite 10, Downing Street, London SW1, the residence of the British Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Tony Blair MP from Tuesday, 3rd. August 1999.
