AVAILABLE REPORTS OF RAIDS, ARRESTS, HARASSMENT AND TORTURE OF THE MQM WORKERS

Following are a few available reports of raids, arrests, harassment and torture committed against the MQM workers by the personnel of the law enforcement agencies in the urban centres of Sindh, southern Pakistan. The Government of Nawaz Sharif is continuing with its MQM Crush Operation, and in the process have given carte blanche to the Administration to use every means, legal or illegal, to physically eliminate the MQM.

17 December 1998:

  1. At around 5 a.m., the personnel of Orangi Town Police Station, led by Mahmood and Mulla Nawab, raided the residence of Saleem Hussain and arrested him. Saleem Hussain 25, son of Jameel Hussain is a worker of MQM Unit 125, Sector Orangi Town. At present he was residing temporarily at House No. 5-A-4, North Karachi, Karachi. Saleem Hussain is physically very weak due to illness. The raiding party dragged him to the APC, looted cash Rs 4000 from the house and threatened the family members. The local Preedy Police Station had denied the arrest of Saleem Hussain, when contacted by the family members.
  2. At around 3 a.m., the personnel of police in plain clothes and uniforms raided thes house of Afaq, an MQM worker of Burns Road. In his absence they arrested Ishtiaq Uddin 22, son of Ikhlaq Uddin, resident of Akbar Road, Frere Market, Burns Road, Karachi, elder brother of Afaq Uddin.

16 December 1998:

  1. At around 2:00 a.m. the personnel of CIA, Sharifabad and Korangi Police Stations conducted a joint raid at the residence of Mohammed Saeed Khan and arrested him. Mohammed Saeed Khan 45, son of Badloo Khan, is a resident of 33/D, Korangi 21/2, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Elder Wing.
  2. At around 4:30 a.m., CIA Saddar raided the residence of Rasheed, a worker of MQM Unit 124, Sector Orangi Town. As Rasheed was not present in the house, the raiding party arrested his elder brother, Saeed Alam 28, son of Mohammed Abbas.
  3. At around 2.30 a.m., the personnel of Korangi Police Station raided the residence of Yaseen and arrested him. Yaseen 40, son of Mohammad Yameen, resident of Korangi, Karachi, is the incharge of MQM Elders Wing in Korangi.
  4. At around 1 a.m., heavy contingent of Police raided the residence of Ms. Naz. They threatened the family, looted the valuables and plundered the house. Ms. Naz, resident of 1751/2, Federal B. Area, Karachi, is a worker of MQM Ladies Wing, Unit 154, Federal B. Area
  5. At around 4 a.m., the personnel of police and CIA raided the residence of Mohammad Zahid and arrested him. Mohammad Zahid son of Tauheed Ahmed is a worker of MQM Unit 124, Sector Orangi Town.
  6. At around 3 a.m., the personnel of CIA and Police raided the residence of Riaz Ahmed. In his absence they threatened the family members, ransacked the house, looted the valuables and demanded money. Riaz Ahmed son of Siddique Ahmed, resident of House No. 503, Aziz Nagar, Karachi, is a worker of MQM Unit 130. This was the third consecutive raid conducted on his residence by the Police.
  7. The personnel of Korangi Police Station, led by SHO Ejaz Shah, raided several houses of MQM workers and supporters and made several arrests. Those who were arrested are: Zakir Hussain son of Ghulam Hussain, Javed, Ehsan, Imran, Mohammad Ahmed son of Shafi Mohammad and Amir Raza.
  8. At around 11 a.m., the personnel of Nazimabad-Gulbahar Police Station, led by SHO Chaudhry Aslam, raided the post office where Abid Zaidi is an employee and arrested him. Abid Zaidi 30, son of Mohsin Zaidi, is the Member of MQM PIB Sector Committee.

15 December 1998:

  1. At around 11 p.m., the personnel of New Karachi Police Station led by SHO Taufeeq Zahid raided the residence of Syed Mohammad Muzaffar and arrested him. Syed Mohammad Muzaffar 25, son of Syed Mohammad Athar, is an MQM worker of Unit 143 Sector North Karachi.
  2. At around 4 p.m., the personnel of Police arrested Saleem by off loading him from the coach, while he was going home. Saleem is a worker of MQM Unit 125, Sector Qasba Alighar, Karachi. Other three MQM workers were also arrested by the personnel of CIA and Police from the area, namely Adnan, Tanweer and Qamar Abbas who are MQM workers of Unit 125, Sector Qasba and Alighar Karachi.
  3. At around midnight, the Police Party raided the houses of Salahuddin, Sarwar and Hanif, workers of MQM Unit 125, Qasba and Aligarh Sector. As all these workers were not present in their houses, the personnel of Police looted the house and threatened the family members.
  4. At around 2:00 p.m., the personnel of CIA and Police raided the residence of Naeem, an MQM worker. The raiding party came in mobile vehicle 544 and a private car (Reg. No. AAF-988). Faisal alias Lamba (a police informer) was also accompanying the raiding party. As Naeem was not present in the house, the raiding party arrested his brother Saleem. He was brutally tortured and released after being threatened to produce his brother.
  5. At around 10:25 p.m., the personnel of CIA and Pak-Colony Police Station raided the residence of Iqbal, Joint Incharge of MQM Pak Colony Sector. As he was not present in the house, the raiding party tortured his father Abdul Karim and threatened his to produce his son. The same raiding party then raided the residence of other MQM workers Nasir and Rehman. In their absence they threatened the family members, looted the valuables and plundered the houses.
  6. The personnel of B-Section Police arrested Afsar Ahmed from Habib Bank, Latifabad, Hyderabad. Afsar Ahmed is a worker of MQM Unit 48, Sector M, Hyderabad.
  7. The personnel of Baldia Police raided the residence of Mubeen, an MQM worker of Unit 1, Hyderabad. In his absence they ransacked the house, looted the valuables and threatened the family members. They have also arrested his brother Shakeel.

14 December 1998:

  1. At around 7 p.m., the personnel of I.G. Police Cell Karachi led by Inspector Farooq Amin raided the temporary residence of Syed Arshad Ali Zaidi at North Karachi, and arrested him. Syed Arshad Ali Zaidi 29, son of Jamsheed Ali Zaidi, is a worker of MQM Unit 32, Sector Lyari, Karachi. At the time of the raid, Mr. Ali was not present in the house but the raiding party remained in the house and arrested him upon his arrival. No warrant of arrested was provided.
  2. At around 8 p.m., the personnel of Peerabad Police Station and CIA raided the temporary residence of Tariq and arrested him. Tariq was living at his grandmother's house. Tariq Yahya 23, son of Abdul Rauf, is a resident of 218/8 Paposh Nagar, Cahndni Chowk, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 181, Sector Nazimabad.
  3. At around midnight, the personnel of A-Section Police raided the residence of Naeem Khan and arrested him. Naeem Khan son of Abdul Ghaffar Khan is a worker of MQM Unit 51, Hyderabad.
  4. In the evening, the personnel of City Police raided the residence of Shahid and arrested him. Shahid son of Umer Daraz is a worker of MQM Unit 3, Hyderabad.

10 December 1998:

In the after-noon, CIA men in plain clothes and the personnel of Zaman Town Police Station arrested Zakir Hussain from the Bolton Market in Saddar. Zakir Hussain was purchasing groceries when the personnel of CIA and Police Party arrested him. Zakir Hussain 32, son of Ghulam Hussain, is a worker of MQM Unit 75, Sector Korangi, Karachi. He is an employee of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Karachi.
