AVAILABLE REPORTS OF RAIDS, ARRESTS, HARASSMENT AND TORTURE OF MQM WORKERS BY THE AUTHORITIES ON THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE NAWAZ SHARIF GOVERNMENT

27 November 1998

1. Mohammad Kamran 22, son of Ajmeri resident of Lyari, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 29, Sector Lyari. At around 2 a.m., the personnel of Civil Lines Police Station arrested him during a raid at his house.
2. The personnel of North Nazimabad Police Station raided the house of Abdul Haque, who is the In-charge of MQM Unit 175. As he was not present in the house, therefore, the raiding party arrested his father and took him to the North Nazimabad Police Station. Later his father was released and the raiding party once again raided the house and looted cash Rs. 7,500 from the house.
3. The personnel of Jamshed Quarter Police Station raided the house of Sajid, son of Mohammad Yameen, who is the Joint In-charge of MQM PIB Sector, Karachi. In his absence they arrested his 25 year old brother Rashid.
4. LIFE IN DANGER At around 4 a.m., the personnel of Sharifabad Police Station led by SHO Fasih Uz Zaman along with heavy contingent of Police raided the temporary residence of Rashid Sabzwari in Block-3, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, and arrested him. It is to be noted that Rashid Sabzwari is at present a very sick man, a day before his arrest he was operated upon for his hipbone fracture for the second time. On 26 November 1998, at around 7 p.m., he was shifted from the hospital to his temporary residence in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi. The raiding party also confiscated some party literature and a photograph album. It is to be noted that Mr. Rashid Sabzwari is the younger brother of Mr. Aslam Sabzwari, who was extra-judicially executed by the law enforcers in July 1995.

26 November 1998

1. Mohammad Saleem 32, son of Mohammad Jameel, resident of Plot 14, 2/52, PIB Colony, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Baldia Town Sector. Between 6 and 7 p.m., the personnel of CIA Police and the local Police arrested him from outside his house. He has been taken to an unknown destination. The family members came to know about his arrest when the Police raided their house after arresting Saleem. At that time the family was informed that Saleem has been arrested.
2. FORMER COUNCILLOR OF MQM ARRESTED At around 3 p.m., the personnel of CIA Police raided the Paper Market in Liaquatabad, Karachi and arrested Jameel Farooqui son of Khalil Farooqui. He is the former Councillor belonging to the MQM of this constituency. It is being learnt that he is being severely tortured in Police custody and has been kept at some unknown destination.
3. Ayaz 27, son of Abdul Sattar, resident of House No. 925/10, Al-Mohajir Chowk, Orangi Town, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 125, Sector Orangi Town. At around 3 a.m., the personnel of CIA Police raided his house and arrested him. The same raiding party also raided the house of Iqbal, a worker of the same unit and arrested him.
4. From 5 a.m. to 8 a.m., the personnel of Liaquatabad Police Station along with the 'agents of persecution', the Haqiqi terrorists cordoned of the Liaquatabad No. 3 Area, Karachi. During this cordon off operation they gathered some 400 people out of their houses. They then entered into the houses verbally abused and molested the women present in the house. The raiding party and the Haqiqi terrorists then went to the house of Nadir Shah, the In-charge of the MQM Unit. They beat his ailing mother and molested his sisters. They also threatened his mother that soon she will be presented with the dead body of her son. The police officials and the Haqiqi terrorists involved in this cordon off operation are: SHO Sarwar Commando, Sajjad alias Kekra, Nisar Haider, Rehan, Asif, Raees Alam, Anees Alam, Babu alias State Bankwala, Musharraf alias KESCwala and others.

25 November 1998

At midnight the personnel of Police led by the notorious SHO Rao Anwar raided the residence of Habib, a worker of MQM Unit 113, Sector Baldia Town, and arrested him. He was immediately subjected to most inhuman torture. As a result his leg was fractured and then on his information the raiding party arrested his brother Shafiq Nabi Ahmed and Ismaeel.

Ismaeel son Abdul Khaliq, resident of 5-G-27/4, Saeedabad, Baldia Town, Karachi. He is the In-charge of MQM Unit 113, Sector Baldia Town.

FORMER COUNCILLOR OF MQM ARRESTED

20 November 1998

Tayyab Yazdani 40, son of Ashfaq Yazdani, resident of 63/2, Sector 5-E, New Karachi, Karachi. He is a former Councillor and an active worker of MQM Unit 140, Sector New Karachi. At around 2 p.m., the personnel of Gulbahar Police Station led by SHO Mohammad Aslam raided the Market where he owned a stall. They arrested him along with his son. After two days his son was released but to date the whereabouts of Tayyab Yazdani is not known. It is being strongly apprehended by the family that he is being tortured brutally and that his life is in danger.
