Prime Minster Nawaz Sharif invokes Article 245 -- calls army in Karachi

Karachi - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday announced that military courts would be established immediately to restore law and order in the violent port city of Karachi.

He said Article 245 of the Constitution has been invoked in southern Sindh province which would give the military powers to support the provincial administration.

Nawaz orders establishment of Military Courts in Karachi

KARACHI: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Friday announced the establishment of Military Courts in Karachi with immediate effect under Article 245 of the Constitution to try cases of terrorism and other heinous crimes.

Addressing a crowded press conference at the Governor House the Prime Minister said the decision for the establishment of Military Courts here has been taken to meet the ends of justice. "Justice will be dispensed with without any delay and which is the cardinal principle of Islam", the Prime Minister announced. He said that dispensation of justice will restore law and order and peace in Karachi, provide protection to the life and property of the people and serve as a deterrent to criminals besides promoting economic activities and generating employment opportunities in this city which will cast soothing effects on the entire country.

Military courts to try alleged terrorists in Karachi: PM
KARACHI, Nov 20: Military courts will be set up in Karachi to try people accused of murders and terrorist acts, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced here Friday.

The move is aimed at ensuring speedy "justice" as part of the government's campaign to stamp out violence and terrorism in Karachi, capital of southern Sindh province, Sharif told a news conference.

He said the cases of hundreds of people arrested in a crackdown over the past three weeks would be tried by military tribunals.

The relevant cases now before the civil courts will be transferred to the military tribunals which are being established under article 245 of the constitution, he said.

Sharif clamped direct federal rule on Sindh on October 30 after dissolving the elected provincial government.-AFP
