RAIDS, ARRESTS, HARASSMENT AND TORTURE BY THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES UPON THE INNOCENT MQM WORKERS, SUPPORTERS AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS CONTINUES…

Karachi: November 11, 1998

Illegal raids and arrests are being conducted by the personnel of the law enforcement agencies in the cities of Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Mirpurkhas. During these raids several MQM workers and supporters have been arrested. It is learnt that they are being subjected to severe torture while in the custody. The houses of MQM workers and supporters are being raided without any 'warrants' and they are being arrested on false and fabricated charges.

Since the imposition of 'Governor Rule' in the province of Sindh, by the Federal Government, the law enforcement agencies have been given a license to raid and make arrest of MQM workers or supporters.

Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) is the third largest political party of Pakistan and the second largest in the province of Sindh.

9 November 1998

1- Kamran Siddiqui 22, son of Nafees Siddiqui, resident of Liaquatabad, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 158, Sector Liaquatabad. At around 6 p.m., he was coming out of the area mosque when the personnel of CIA and Sharifabad Police Station in four APCs and six mobiles arrested him. He was immediately subjected to most brutal torture.

2- The personnel of Shah Faisal Police Station raided the house of Shakeel Jafri, a worker of MQM Unit 103, Sector Shah Faisal Colony. In his absence his parents were badly beaten by the raiding party and his younger brother Afzal Jafri was arrested. During this raid the personnel of law enforcement agencies looted valuables from the house and for the release of Afzal, they have threatened the family to produce Shakeel in the Police Station.

3- At around 5.55 a.m., the personnel of Shah Faisal Police Station in Mobile No. 407 and APC 331 led by SHO raided the house of Salman Khaliq, Joint In-charge of Shah Faisal Sector and arrested him.

4- At around 6.20 a.m., the personnel of Orangi Town Police Station led by SHO Aslam Rathore, raided the house of the in-laws of Ali Hussain Zaidi, a worker of MQM Unit 123, Sector Orangi Town. In his absence they arrested his brother Akhtar Hussain Zaidi 24, son of Intizaar Hussain Zaidi.

5- At around 8.45 a.m., the personnel of Orangi Town Police Station raided the house of Babu Bhai, the Incharge of MQM Orangi Town Sector. In his absence they ransacked the house and looted the valuables including some important files and 3 telephone sets.

6- At around 12.10 p.m., the personnel of Korangi Police Station led by SHO Ejaz Shah raided the Co-ordination office of MQM Korangi Sector. They ransacked the entire office and looted all the equipment present in the office. When the area residents came out of their houses and protested over this illegal act, they too were beaten by the Police.

7- At around 3.45 p.m., the personnel of Korangi Police Station raided the house of Tariq, resident of A-33-D, Korangi No. 2-1/2, Karachi. He is the member of MQM Korangi Sector Committee. In his absence they abused and molested the family members and looted 83,000 rupees in cash, video player, television, jewellery, tape recorder, etc.

8- At around 11 a.m., two plain clothed personnel of law enforcement agencies came to the house of Ms. Razia Sarwar at Flat No. 25, Block A-9, Jauhar Square, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi. They inquired the whereabouts of her two sons Amir Aziz and Nasir Aziz. They also showed her an arrest order from the Inspector General of Police.

9- At around 2 a.m., the personnel of Orangi Town and Mominabad Police Stations raided the house of Aslam, a worker of MQM Unit 124, Sector Orangi Town. In his absence they arrested his two brothers. The raiding party also raided the house of his in-laws.

10- Imran 27, son of Karamat Ullah, resident of Shadman Town, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 181, Sector Nazimabad. At around 7.30 a.m., he was arrested by the CIA Police Saddar from the Sharah-e-Faisal Karachi.

MQM OFFICE IN PUNJAB SEALED BY POLICE

1- At around 6 a.m., the Police raided the MQM office at Civil Hospital Chowk in Multan, Punjab, and have sealed the office. They have further threatened that this office should not be re-opened under any circumstances.

2- At around 4 a.m., the Police raided the house of Khalid Murtuza, former office bearer of MQM Labour Division and arrested him. He was told that his parole has expired, therefore, he is being taken into custody. It is to be remembered that Khalid Murtuza is paralysed and sits in a wheelchair.

3- At around 3 a.m., the personnel of Orangi Police Station raided the house of an MQM worker Wajid Ali, who was murdered earlier. During this raid they arrested his younger brother Izhar Hussain.

4- Alamgir 27, son of Habib, resident of House No. 165, Touheed Colony, Orangi No. 11, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 124, Sector Orangi Town. At around 2 a.m., the personnel of Orangi, Mominabad and Extension Police Stations raided his house and arrested him.

5- Khurram Qureshi 25, son of Qayyum Qureshi, resident of H-13, Noorani Masjid Road, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 1, Agra Taj Colony. At around 1 a.m., the personnel of Kalri Police Station led by the SHO raided his house and arrested him along with his brother Naeem Qureshi. They also arrested Mujahid, a worker of MQM from the same area. He is being subjected to most brutal torture.

6- At around 3 a.m., the personnel of Nazimabad Police Station raided several houses of MQM workers and supporters and made arrests. Those who were arrested are:

  1. Shoaib Ahmed son of Shamim Ahmed,
  2. Fareed Gul son of Gul Mohammad,
  3. Aftab Ahmed son of Noor Mohammad,
  4. Mohammad Ali son of Shakil,
  5. Rehan
  6. Zahid
  7. Nasir Ali son of Mubarak Ali and
  8. Sabih Uddin son of Mobeen Uddin.

7- Asif Memon 22, son of Mohammad Ayub, resident of 929, 5-L, North Karachi, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 136-A, Sector North Karachi. At around 5 a.m., the personnel of North Karachi Police Station raided his house and arrested him.

8- In the indiscriminate raids personnel of Shah Faisal Police Station raided several houses of MQM workers and supporters. During these raids

  1. former sector member Ishtiaq Ahmed son of Zameer Ahmed was arrested,
  2. Jabbar, his wife and their 12 year old son was arrested, and
  3. the 70 year old Sheikh Ismaeel, father of Sheikh Arshad was badly beaten-up by the law enforcers.

9- The personnel of law enforcement agencies raided several houses of MQM workers in Unit 31 and made arrests. Those who were arrested are:

  1. Taufeeq son of Rafiq,
  2. Javed son of Nawab Uddin, an office bearer of MQM Unit 31
  3. Hafiz Ullah son of Rehmat Ullah

1- Syed Abbas Zaidi 25, son of Syed Sabir Hussain Zaidi, resident of F-64, Qasbah Aligarh Colony, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 132, Sector Qasbah Aligarh. At around 4 a.m., the personnel of CIA Police raided his house and arrested him.

2- Fareed Ahmed Tajik 25, son of Abdul Hameed Tajik, resident of L-932, 5-A-2, North Karachi. He is a worker of APMSO. At around 9 a.m., he left his house for B. Ed College -- neither he reached the college nor did he return home. It is apprehended that he has been arrested by the CIA Police and taken to their torture cell in Saddar, Karachi.

3- Khalid Ahmed 25, son of Muneer Ahmed, resident of Qasbah Aligarh, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 131, Sector Qasbah Aligarh. At around 8 a.m., he was arrested by the personnel of law enforcement agencies from the main gate of the income tax office, where he works.

4- Mohammad Rashid 28, son of Sharif Ahmed, resident of North Karachi, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 136-A, Sector North Karachi. At around 5 p.m., he was arrested from Malir and then shifted to the New Karachi Police Station where he is being subjected to most brutal torture.

5- Mohammad Tahir Khan 21, son of Mohammad Taqi Khan, resident of F/26-1, P&T Colony, Gizri, Karachi. He is the brother of Alim, an MQM worker of Unit 7, Sector Defence. He was arrested from the market while he was buying groceries for the house. Police is threatening the family of dire consequences if they do not produce Alim at the Police Station.

6- The personnel of Azizabad Police Station raided a house 261-B, Azizabad, Federal B. Area, Karachi, in search of Naushad, an MQM worker. The raiding party was led by SHO Kazmi. They forcibly entered the house and started abusing and molesting the family members.

1- Rehan Habib 26, son of Nazeer Ahmed Khan, resident of R-542, Block-8, Federal B. Area, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 153, Sector Federal B. Area and the brother of an MQM worker Muzaffar, who was murdered by the terrorists near Nine Zero. He was arrested while he was coming out of the apartment of his brother (Flat No. G-6, Erum Centre, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi) by the personnel of Airport Police Station led by the notorious SHO Anwar Ahmed Khan. He was immediately subjected to most brutal torture.

2- Sharf Uddin 30, son of Moeen Uddin, resident of S-D-117, New Karachi, Quarter No. 7, Karachi. He is the Incharge of MQM Unit 165, Sector Liaquatabad. The personnel of CIA Police Saddar arrested him from the Airport while boarding a flight to Dubai.

3- Shehzad 32, son of Mohammad Shakoor, resident of G/374, Korangi 5-1/2, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 76, Sector Korangi. He was arrested from his house during a cordon off operation of the Korangi Police.

4- Ahmer 22, son of Asghar, resident of 383, 50-B, Korangi 5-1/2, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 76, Sector Korangi. He was arrested from his house during a cordon off operation of the Korangi Police.

5- Sultan 26, son of Salman, resident of D-601, Korangi 5-1/2, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 76, Sector Korangi. He was arrested from his house during a cordon off operation of the Korangi Police.

6- At around 4 a.m., Police raided the house (R-75, Dastagir, Karachi) of Shamim son of Laeeq and arrested him. He is a worker of MQM.
