ILLEGAL RAIDS AND ARRESTS OF MQM WORKERS IS A DAILY ROUTINE IN THE URBAN CENTERS OF SINDH, SOUTHERN PROVINCE OF PAKISTAN

Karachi, April 5, 1998, The Members of the MQM Central Co-ordination Committee have strongly condemned the illegal raids and arrest of its office bearers, workers and sympathisers in Karachi and Sukkur. They appealed to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Sindh to immediately stop the illegal raids and arrests of innocent MQM workers, supporters and their family members. The Committee further stated that despite MQM being the coalition partner in the Government of Sindh, raids and arrests of its workers by the personnel of law enforcement agencies has become a daily routine. During these raids on the houses of MQM workers and supporters, if they are not present in the house then their other family members are harassed and arrested.

DETAILS OF RAIDS AND ARREST OF MQM WORKERS AND SUPPORTERS ON 4 APRIL 1998

  1. Mohammad Qamar Naeem son of Mohammad Yaseen, aged 20 years, resident of House No. L-162, Sector 48-E, Korangi No. 2-1/2, Karachi, a worker of MQM Unit 75, Sector Korangi, Karachi. At around 3.15 a.m., the personnel of Zaman Town Police Station raided his house and arrested him.
  2. Mohammad Aslam son of Mohammad Islam, member of MQM Rohri Sector Committee. At around 1.15 a.m., the personnel of CIA Police raided the Hotel Khairpur Tandra and arrested him. Mohammad Murad alias 'Langru' led the CIA raiding party.
  3. Jamal Uddin son of Syed Faiz Mobeen, aged 25 years, a worker of MQM Unit 75, Sector Korangi. At around midnight the personnel of Zaman Town Police Station raided his house and arrested him.
