NAEEM AFRIDI, AN MQM SYMPATHISER, RUTHLESSLY SHOT DEAD BY THE POLICE IN ORANGI TOWN, KARACHI

Karachi, February 20, 1998

Naeem Afridi, aged 20 years, son of Abdul Kareem Afridi, resident of House No. 378, Sector 15-B, Orangi Town, Karachi, a sympathiser of MQM Unit 121, Sector Orangi Town, Karachi.

On 17 February 1998, at around 1.10 a.m., Naeem Afridi returning home from a marriage ceremony was intercepted by a Police Squad. The Police Squad after stopping him demanded bribe. Naeem Afridi refused to pay the bribe which enraged the Police Squad. Failing to control their temper, they ordered an APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier) to launch an attack on Naeem Afridi’s house with a view to shoot him in cold blood. In fact, moments later, the APC arrived and the Squad of Orangi Extension Police Station headed by ASI Haider Ali including ASI Amanat Ali, CIA official Sultan Mehmood, Ismail, Shafique, and Shehzad Butt, reached the residence of Naeem Afridi and entered the house forcibly. The Police Squad opened fire on Naeem and others present in the house. As a result of the heavy firing Naeem Afridi died on the spot while another resident namely, Kashan was seriously injured.
