KARACHI: Speakers at a gathering organised by the Sports Medicine Association of Pakistan (SMAP) paid tributes to its former chief, the late Dr Nishat Mallick who was killed by unidentified persons last year, and lauded his services for introducing sports medicine in the country.

Chairman Senate Muhammadmian Soomro, as guest of honour, presided at the seminar held on Sunday at a local hotel while Governor Ishratul Ebad was the chief guest. In his speech, the chairman senate, who specially came to attend the memorial function, informed the participants about his long relations with Dr Mallick. He observed that Dr Mallick was a man of his words and stressed the need to make all out efforts in continuing with his mission regarding sports medicine.

Governor Ishratul Ebad lauded the achievements and contributions of the late Dr Nishat in the field of sports medicine both nationally and the world over. According to Ebad, he was the key architect of sports medicine in Pakistan and had taken giant strides instead of conventional step-by-step attainment for its promotion.

He congratulated the SMAP for their untiring efforts and devotion in managing seminars and courses and in living up to the wishes of Dr Nishat Mallick. Deputy convenor of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Dr Farooq Sattar was of the view that speaking truth was the only sin of Dr Nishat Mallick for which he was punished.

He maintained that time and circumstances had pushed Dr Mallick into politics, as he had no previous political background, adding that he joined a party, which was solely against hereditary politics.

Shirala Mallick, the widow of Dr Nishat expressed gratitude to the SMAP, the guest of honour, the chief guest and others for gracing the occasion. She also shared various incidents with the participants, saying that Dr Nishat had always given preference to his country over all other things.

Ucksy Mallick, the only son of Dr Nishat, vice-president and secretary general SMAP Dr Wajahat Hussain and Dr Pervez Rezvey, Olympian Islahuddin, Dr Ejaz Vohra and others also spoke. Later, a shield was presented to Chairman Senate Muhammadmian Soomro and Governor Dr Ebad.

The programme was largely attended by family friends, government officials, politicians and others. Those prominent among the gathering were Sindh Minister for Transport, Labour and Industries Adil Siddiqui, Planning and Development Minister Shoaib Bukhari, Haleem Siddiqui, and Nasreen Jalil.
