GOVERNMENT SHOULD ALLOW US TO ORGANISE RALLIES AGAINST TERRORISM – ALTAF HUSSAIN

PEOPLE OF KARACHI HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RALLIES OF THE SO-CALLED RELIGIOUS AND JIHADI ORGANISATIONS

London – 19 September 2001

Mr Altaf Hussain, MQM Founder and Leader, while addressing a gathering of all the office bearers of different wings of the MQM including the Coordination Committee, once again strongly condemned the terrorist attacks upon America and discussed in detail on its effects worldwide.

Mr Hussain said that the so-called religious and jihadi organisations have been activated to hold demonstrations and rallies by the Establishment to hoodwink the public in the name of Islam.  When the government has allowed the religious organisations to take out processions then it should also allow everyone to exercise its democratic right to protest in favour or against any issue.  And, therefore, the government should allow us to organise rallies against terrorism.  The international community should also impress upon the Government of Pakistan to allow the MQM to take out peaceful processions and rallies.

Clarifying to the international community, Mr Hussain said that the people of Karachi have nothing to do with the rallies of the so-called religious and jihadi organisations.  The people of Karachi and Sindh Province are against terrorism.  They have always supported and would continue to support the MQM.  They have time and again rejected these so-called religious parties in all the general elections.  The international community is welcome to send their representatives to witness themselves the oppression upon the people of Sindh.  If the people of Sindh were allowed to speak freely, only then the international community would become fully aware of their plight and their support for the MQM.  For the past 54 years, the Province of Sindh and its people have been made the target of State oppression.  They are peacefully struggling for the rights of Sindh province and have made numerous sacrifices.

Mr Altaf Hussain said that to mislead the international community, the Establishment has activated the religious parties and jihadi organisations to take out the so-called rallies, particularly in Karachi, with the full protection and assistance of the army, paramilitary rangers and police.  Addressing the international community, Mr Hussain said that at the time of water shortage in Sindh Province, the Administration and police unleashed a reign of terror upon the peaceful protestors of the MQM and JSQM. They brutally tortured the peaceful protestors and arrested hundreds of people.  More than 250 people including children of 12-14 years, who were arrested, have still not been released.  The people could very well understand that these rallies are not being organised in the name of Islam, in fact, these rallies are being organised to serve the interests of the Establishment.  Mr Hussain said that if these religious and jihadi organisations would have been sincere with Islam then they would have also taken out such rallies when more than 15000 people were extra-judicially murdered in Sindh, funeral processions were being fired upon, womenfolk were compelled to carry and even bury the funerals of their loved ones.  However, they chose not to.  In fact, at that time these organisations celebrated and sided with the murderers of Mohajirs.  Why didn’t these parties take out rallies in support of the Stranded Pakistanis, languishing in the Red Cross Camps for the past 31 years?

Mr Hussain said that these religious and jihadi organisations deluded in the past and now once again they have jumped in the field and are raising the slogan, “Islam is in danger”.  However, we should not fall into their trap.  Mr Hussain said that he is confident that his companions, the public, mothers, sisters and elders through their unity would defeat the conspiracy of the Establishment.

Mr Hussain said that MQM is the third largest political party of the country and the second largest in the Sindh Province with a following of more than 30 million workers and supporters.  He once again offered his unconditional and total support to the international community that in this time of need, we are with them and thousands of our workers and the public are ready to extend their fullest cooperation.  Mr Hussain advised the office bearers and workers to remain vigilant, physically and mentally prepared, remain in touch with each other and inform the public about the conspiracies of the Establishment.
