REPORTS OF ATROCITIES UPON MQM LEADERS, WORKERS, SUPPORTERS AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS BY THE NAWAZ SHARIF GOVT

25 September 1999

  1. At around 3:00 a.m., the personnel of Mominabad Police Station raided the house of Tabarak at House No. 886, Block J, Imam Colony, Sector 11 1/2, Orangi Town, Karachi. In his absence they ransacked the house and arrested his two brothers. Mohammad Tabarak is the Incharge of MQM Elder Wing Sector Committee. Those arrested are:
  1. At around 2:00 a.m., the personnel of C.I.A Police raided the temporary residence of Mohammad Tariq at Paposh Nagar, Nazimabad, Karachi and arrested him. Mohammad Tariq 30, is a member of MQM Unit 99 Committee, Malir Sector, Karachi.
  2. The personnel of Law Enforcement Agencies and Police arrested two women from the MQM Peaceful Rally Point at Shown Chowrangi, Clifton, Karachi. These women are workers of MQM Ladies Wing. Those arrested are:
  1. Dozens of workers attending the MQM Peaceful Public Rally were also arrested from Shown Chowrangi, Karachi. A few names that we have been able to receive so far are:

22 September 1999

  1. At around 9:30 p.m., the personnel C.I.A Police, led by Rizwan and Shahid, raided the house of Ahsan Ullah and arrested him. Ahsan Ullah 25, son of Wali Ullah is a Joint Incharge of MQM Unit 133, North Karachi Sector. He is being detained at unknown destination.
  2. At around 2 p.m., the personnel of CIA Police arrested Sheikh Mohammad Arif Ullah, while he was coming out of the Civic Centre in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi. Another MQM worker Javed Jamal who was accompanying him was also arrested. They have been taken to unknown destination and it is strongly feared that their lives are in danger. It should be noticed that Sheikh Mohammad Arif Ullah is the brother of Sheikh Mohammad Amir Ullah, the MQM worker who has been falsely implicated in the murder of Hakim Saeed by the Authorities on the instructions of Nawaz Sharif Government. Sheikh Arif Ullah and Javed Jamal are both workers of MQM Unit 161, Sector Liaquatabad.

20 September 1999

  1. At around 3:45 p.m., the personnel of C.I.A Police and Special Branch Police Force arrested Rehan from Jinnah Polytechnic College at Nazimabad, Karachi. Rehan 25, son of Abdul Samad Siddiqui, resident of 1/124, Commercial Area, Liaquatabad, Karachi. He is a Member of APMSO (MQM Student Wing), Sector B Committee. He is being detained at unknown destination.
  2. At around 4:20 a.m., the personnel of Sharifabad Police Station, led by ASI Niazi raided the house of Haroon Baig and arrested him. Haroon Baig 28, son of Mirza Atiq Baig is a worker of MQM Unit 159, Liaquatabad Sector, Karachi.

18 September 1999

The personnel of Liaquatabad Police Station, led by notorious SHO Sarwar alias Commando, arrested two MQM workers from the street of Liaquatabad, 420 Hotel, Karachi. Those arrested are:

  1. At around 1:00 a.m., the personnel of C.I.A Police raided the Press Office at M. A. Jinnah Road, and arrested Tariq Nazeer. Tariq Nazeer 24, son of Nazeer is a worker of MQM Unit 70, Korangi Sector, Karachi.
  2. The personnel of Korangi Police Station, led by SHO Ejaz Shah raided the house of Imran and arrested him. He is a worker of MQM Unit 70, Korangi Sector, Karachi.
  3. The personnel of Nazimabad Police Station raided the house of Sheharyar Khan and arrested him. Sheharyar Khan 19, son of Abdul Rasheed Khan is the Incharge of MQM Unit 179, Nazimabad Sector, Karachi.

15 September 1999

The personnel of Saudabad Police Station raided the temporary residence of Mansoor at Gulshan-e-Iqbal and arrested him. Mansoor 35, son of Choty Khan is a member of MQM Photographic Section, at Nine Zero, the MQM Head Office.

EXTRA-JUDICIAL MURDERS

14 September 1999

  1. An MQM worker Rehan Bandhani, who was unlawfully arrested on 5 September 1999, was brutally tortured in police custody, and extra-judicially killed in the early hours of 14 September 1999. He was kept in unlawful detention for nine (9) days and during this entire time he was brutally tortured to sign a pre-written confessional statement. Finally in the early hours of 14 September 1999, he was murdered in cold blood while in the custody of Police.

    Rehan Bandhani, aged 24 years, was a worker of MQM Unit 159, Bandhani Colony. The personnel of Liaquatabad Police Station and Super Market Police Station unlawfully arrested him during a raid, in the early hours of 5 September 1999, from his temporary residence in Orangi Town, Karachi. The Police party was led by SHO Nasir and the notorious police officer Sarwar alias Commando, known for inflicting brutal torture and directly responsible for the extra-judicial killings of numerous MQM workers and supporters.

    At the time of the arrest of Rehan Bandhani, MQM had issued a press statement, clearly apprehending that if the President of Pakistan did not intervene to save his life, he might be tortured and murdered extra-judicially in police custody. It is highly regretted that despite MQM's notices and appeals to the President, the Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister and the Governor or Sindh, criminally neglected it and today in the early hours Rehan Bandhani was ruthlessly tortured to death while in police custody.
  2. Mr. Mukhtar, Member of MQM Elders Wing, who was arrested on 11 September 1999, at around 2 a.m., has died today. The personnel of Nazimabad Police Station had arrested him and for two days he was severely beaten in the police station. On 14 August 1999, he was produced before a Magistrate, where he suffered a heart attack and could not survive and died in the Jinnah Cardiovascular Hospital, Karachi. Mr. Mukhtar 60, was a Member of MQM Elders Wing of Unit 188, Sector Nazimabad-Gulbahar. He leaves behind a widow and eight children.

13 September 1999

  1. The personnel of Azizabad Police Station, led by ASI Mohammad Kamil and Mohammad Yaqoob raided the house of Nabeel 15, son of Abdul Razzaq and arrested him. He is the brother of Naeem Shari, an MQM worker murdered extra-judicially.
  2. At around 4:00 a.m., the personnel of Zaman Town Police Station raided the temporary residence of Athar at Alkhwan Manzil, Dastagir No. 9, Karachi and arrested him. He is a worker of MQM Unit 87, Landhi Sector, Karachi.
  3. At around 3:45 a.m., the personnel of Gulbahar Police Station, led by ASI Alamgir raided the temporary residence of Mustafa and arrested him with three brothers. He is a worker of MQM Unit 165, Sector Liaquatabad, Karachi. Those arrested are:

  1. The personnel of Orangi Town No. 5, Police Station raided the house of Rashid Ghaznavi at 11-E, Orangi Town and arrested him. Rashid Ghaznavi is a worker of MQM and a former counsellor of Karachi. He is being detained at Orangi Town No. 5, Police Station and according to reports brutal torture is being inflicted upon him.
  2. The personnel of Gulbahar Police Station raided the house of Waseem at Federal B Area, Karachi, and arrested him. Waseem 30, son of Mumtaz is the Incharge of MQM Unit 150, Federal B Area Sector, Karachi. He is being detained at Gulbahar Police Station.
  3. The personnel of Shah Faisal Police Station, led by SHO Mobeen raided the house of Liaquat 30, arrested him. He is a worker of MQM Unit 105, Shah Faisal Sector, Karachi. He is being detained at unknown destination.

11 September 1999

  1. Dozens of workers who had come from Hyderabad to attend the MQM Public Rally were arrested from Nine Zero. A few names that we have been able to receive so far are: Javed, Fazal Imam, Saliheen, Fazal Ur Rehman, Manzoor, Yameen, Mirza Waqar Baig, Atiur Rehman, Sheikh Mulla, Imam Uddin and Imtiaz from KKF Office.
  2. Furthermore, it has also been reported by eyewitnesses that the police personnel were chanting the slogans of "Allah Akbar", when they raided Nine Zero, as if they were entering into enemy territory to take part in war.
  3. Hundreds of workers MQM Ladies Wing went to attend MQM Public Rally were arrested at Allah Wali Chowk, Tariq Road. A few names that we have been able to receive so far are Khursheed Afsar, Zahida, Waqar Un Nisa, Najma Zaman, Shamshad, Raffia and Waseem.
  4. The personnel of Lee Market Police Station raided the shop of Hanif Hashmi at Lee Market, Karachi, and arrested him. Hanif Hashmi 35, son of Abdul Waheed Hashmi is a worker of MQM Unit Gulshan-e-Maymar, Karachi. He is being detained at unknown destination.
  5. The personnel of Ferozeabad Police Station arrested Nadeem Ahmed 20, son of Zaheer Ahmed from the MQM Public Rally in Karachi. His father is a worker of MQM Unit 135, Federal B Area Sector, Karachi.
  6. At around 3:00 a.m., the personnel of Saeedabad Police Station raided the house of Sattar and arrested him. Sattar 25, son of Karim Bukhsh is worker of MQM Unit 112, Baldia Town Sector, Karachi.

10 September 1999

The personnel of Gizri Police Station raided the house of Mohammad Athar and arrested him. Mohammad Athar 26, son of Mohammad Hanif is a worker of MQM Unit 7, Sector Defence.

8 September 1999

  1. At around 8:00 p.m., the personnel of Model Town Police Station raided the house of Tahir Rasool Qureshi, at 32/3 Shade No. 13, Model Colony, Karachi. He is the Incharge of MQM Unit 198, Model Colony, Karachi. In his absence they ransacked the house and arrested his brother Nasir Rasool Qureshi 30, son of Ghulam Rasool Qureshi.
  2. The personnel of C.I.A Police raided the house of Mairaj and arrested him. Mairaj 20, son of Laiq is a worker of MQM Unit 5, Defence Sector, Karachi. He is being detained at unknown destination.
  3. At around 5:00 p.m., the personnel of Jamshed Quarter Police Station, cordoned off the street of Jamshed Quarter and arrested Nauman. Nauman 20, son of Subhan is a worker of MQM Unit 56, P.I.B Sector, Karachi. He is being detained at Jamshed Quarter Police Station. He is being subjected to brutal torture.

EXTRA-JUDICIAL MURDERS

6 September 1999

Two more Mohajir youth Jamal Hussain and Mohammad Saleem belonging to the MQM were extra-judicially killed today by the police in Karachi. According to details, between 3.30 and 4 a.m., heavy contingent of police comprising of Mominabad Police Station, Gulshan-e-Bihar Police Station and Orangi Town No. 5 Police Station, led by SHO Taufeeq Zahid, raided the temporary residence of Jamal Hussain and Mohammad Saleem and arrested them. They were immediately subjected to most brutal torture, blindfolded and taken to the nearby Irani Football Ground at Orangi No. 11, Karachi, where they were ruthlessly shot dead. Their details are:

It should be recalled that more than two dozen MQM workers and supporters have been extra-judicially killed since October 1998, after the suspension of elected Sindh Assembly and the imposition of Federal Rule in Sindh province. Recently, since the appointment of Syed Ghaus Ali Shah as the Federal Advisor of the Federal Government for Sindh as Incharge of the province, this is the third case of extra-judicial murder claiming the lives of five MQM workers and supporters.

5 September 1999

  1. The personnel of New Karachi Police Station, led by notorious SHO Taufiq Zahid raided the house of Faisal Sharif and arrested him. Faisal Sharif is a worker of MQM Unit 140, New Karachi Sector. He is being detained at the New Karachi Police Station.
  2. At around 2:00 a.m., the personnel of Liaquatabad Police Station, led by SHO Nasir raided the house of Mohammad Zubair Talha in Malir, Karachi. In his absence they ransacked the house and misbehaved with her family and arrested his older father Mohammad Hanif 70, son of Abdul Ghani and younger brother Mohammad Abdullah 18, son of Mohammad Hanif. Police party looted all valuables and took with them important documents.

3 September 1999

  1. The personnel of Nabi Bukhsh Police Station and C.I.A Police arrested MQM workers from Fresco Chowk. Those arrested are.
  1. The personnel of Nabi Bux Police Station opened indiscriminate fire upon the MQM workers and supporters, who were returning to their homes after attending the MQM public rally. Due to this heavy firing one MQM worker Imran was seriously injured and had to be admitted in Jinnah Hospital. Imran 27, son of Mohammad Hussain, is a resident of Fatima Square, Garden West, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 33, Sector Lyari.

1 September 1999

  1. At around 3:00 a.m., the personnel of Zaman Town Police Station raided the house of Irshad and arrested him. Irshad 28, son of Ashfaque is the Incharge of MQM Unit 98, Malir Sector, Karachi.
  2. The personnel of Taimuria Police Station and Latifabad Police Station, led by SP Dogar, raided the temporary residence of Zaheer Uddin in Hyderabad, and arrested him. Zaheer Uddin 28, son of Abdul Aziz is a worker of MQM Unit 136, North Karachi Sector, Karachi. He is being detained at Taimuria police Station. He is being subjected brutal torture.
  3. At around 2:00 a.m., the personnel of Model Town Police Station, raided the temporary residence of Mohammad Iqbal and arrested him. Mohammad Iqbal 35, son of S. M. Moosa is a worker of MQM Labour Division Wing, Unit PIA.
  4. The personnel of Korangi Police Station raided the house of Hyder and arrested him. Hyder 22, is a worker of MQM Unit 82, Landhi Sector. He is being subjected brutal torture.

30 August 1999

  1. On 31 August 1999, Sub Inspector Sadaqat Ali of Buffer Zone Police Station arrested Arif Jamal 25, resident of Nazia Square, Buffer Zone, Karachi. He is the Incharge of MQM North Nazimabad Sector. According to details, at around 2 a.m., the personnel of Buffer Zone Police Station raided the temporary residence of Arif Jamal at Flat 12, Hyatt Corner, Sector 10, North Karachi, Karachi, and arrested him. It is strongly apprehended that he is being subjected to brutal torture and extra-judicially killed.
  2. In the afternoon, personnel of police in plain clothes arrested Mohammad Farooq from his shop in Hyderi Market, Karachi. The raiding party came in a yellow cab and a private white car. Mohammad Farooq has been arrested twice. Mohammad Farooq 32, son of Mohammad Habib Ur Rehman, is the brother of Zafar, Member of MQM Medical Aid Committee.
  3. At around 10 p.m., the personnel of Police, Paramilitary Rangers and other law enforcers in plain clothes, led by SHO Nasir Hussain, raided a valima (marriage) reception in Liaquatabad, Karachi and arrested Shahid Ahmed. The entire marriage hall was cordoned off and no one was allowed to leave the hall. Shahid Ahmed 24, son of Basheer Ahmed, is a resident of Nazimabad, Karachi. He is the Joint Incharge of MQM Unit 188, Sector Nazimabad.

29 August 1999

  1. At around 4:00 a.m., the personnel of Sachal Rangers (Para Military Rangers), raided the house of Mirza Jawed Baig and arrested him. Mirza Jawed Baig 28, son of Mirza Basher Baig is a worker of MQM Student Wing (APMSO) and Unit 184, Nazimabad Sector. He is being detained at unknown destination.
  2. At around 3:00 a.m., the personnel of Shah Faisal Police Station raided the house of Munwar Sheikh at Shah Faisal Colony, Karachi. In his absence they ransacked the house and misbehaved with her family, and arrested his tow younger brother, Rashid Sheikh 22, son of Mohammad Ishaq and Asif Sheikh 25, son Mohammad Ishaq. Munawar Sheikh is an Incharge of MQM Unit 105, Shah Faisal Colony Sector, Karachi.
  3. EXTRA-JUDICIAL MURDER

Early this morning, Mohammad Rafiq 24, son of Mohammad Rasheed, an MQM worker of Unit 164, Sector Liaquatabad, was extra-judicially murdered in a fake "police encounter" by SHO Sarwar Commando of Liaquatabad Police Station.

According to first information received here, ASI Nasir of Liaquatabad Police Station on the instructions of SHO Sarwar Commando arrested the father of Mohammad Rafiq from his house. He was brutally tortured in the Liaquatabad Police Station to divulge the whereabouts of his son. Mohammad Rafiq was arrested two days ago from his temporary residence at Rafi Bungalows in Malir, Karachi.

It was announced today in a police handout that a police party headed by SHO Sarwar Commando was conducting snap checking at Teen Hutti Bridge early this morning when they signalled two bike riders to stop. However, the other party started firing. On this the SHO retaliated and the person driving the bike fell on the road and died on the spot, while his accomplice managed to flee in injured condition.

The fact is that Mohammad Rafiq was arrested two days earlier. How is it possible that he was riding on the motorbike at the time of so-called "police encounter"? It is, therefore, abundantly clear that he was severally tortured and extra-judicially killed while in police custody.

28 August 1999

  1. At around 7:30 a.m., the personnel of Ranger (Para Military Force) and Nazimabad Police Station arrested Safdar, from a petrol pump at Nazimabad. Safdar 26, son of Zahoor Khan is a worker of MQM Nazimabad Sector.
  2. The personnel of Frere Police Station raided the house of Mohammad Aslam 45, and arrested him. He is a worker of MQM Unit 5, Punjab Colony, Karachi.
  3. The personnel of Liaquatabad Police Station arrested Asif Mughal from Liaquatabad, Karachi. Asif Mughal 18, son of Shabbir is a worker of MQM Unit 162, Liaquatabad Sector. He is being detained at unknown destination.
  4. At around 11:00 a.m., the personnel of C.I.A South, raided the house of Iqbal Mohammad at Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, and arrested him. Iqbal Mohammad Ali Khan 35, son of Mohammad Yaqoob Ali Khan, is a worker of MQM Gulshan-e-Iqbal Sector, Karachi. He is also a former MQM councillor.
  5. At around 8:00 p.m., the personnel of C.I.A Saddar, led by Raja Ilyas raided the house of Ali Hussain at Orangi Town, Karachi, and arrested him. Ali Hussain 28, son of Syed Mazahir Hussain is brother of Wajid Ali Safdar, who was extra-judicially murdered. He is being detained at C.I.A Saddar, Karachi.
  6. Since 5 p.m., Mohammad Irfan Khan, resident of House No. D-351, Hasrat Mohani Colony, Karachi has gone missing. He was last seen leaving his college. Mohammad Irfan Khan 28, son of Mohammad Ishaq Khan is a worker of MQM unit 186, Sector Pak Colony. It is strongly apprehended that he has been arrested by police and his life is in danger.

27 August 1999

  1. The personnel of Pak Colony Police Station raided the house of Naseem Sheikh at Pak Colony, Karachi. In his absence they ransacked the house and arrested his brother Waseem Sheikh 20, son of Haji Habib. He is being detained at Pak Colony Police Station.
  2. The personnel of Sharifabad Police Station raided the house of Rafiq and arrested him. Rafiq 45, son of Hashmatullah is a member of MQM, Elder Wing Committee. He is being detained at Sharifabad Police Station.
  3. The personnel of Sharifabad Police Station raided the house of Syed Mohammad Ishrat and arrested him. Syed Mohammad Ishrat 38, son of Syed Mohammad Amin is member of MQM Elder Wing Committee, Liaquatabad, Karachi. He is being detained at Sharifabad Police Station.
  4. The personnel of Sharifabad Police Station raided the house of Amir at Liaquatabad, and arrested him. Amir 20, son of Noor Mohammad is an active worker of MQM Unit 157, Sector Liaquatabad, Karachi. He is being detained at Sharifabad Police Station and subjected brutal torture.
  5. The personnel of Sharifabad Police Station raided the house of Abdul Jabbar and arrested him. Abdul Jabbar is a supporter of MQM Unit 157, Liaquatabad Sector. He is being detained at Sharifabad Police Station.

At around 5:00 p.m., the personnel of C.I.A and North Karachi Police Station raided the temporary residence of Ameer Ahmed and arrested him. Ameer Ahmed 30, son of Nazeer Ahmed, is a member of MQM, Shah Faisal Sector Committee. He is being detained at unknown destination.

The personnel of Pak Colony Police Station and C.I.A, in Pak Colony, Karachi, raided the house of Zaheer Uddin Babar, who was extra-judicially murdered by Police. They arrested his brother Aziz Uddin 25, son of Islam Uddin.
