MEMBERS OF MUTTAHIDA ORGANISING COMMITTEE OF MQM AND OTHER
WORKERS AND SUPPORTERS ARRESTED BY THE PARAMILITARY RANGERS AND
OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN KARACHI
February 8, 1999
On 4 February 1999, the personnel of
Paramilitary Rangers raided an apartment at Rashid Minhas Road
and arrested four members of Muttahida Organising Committee (MOC)
of MQM and a worker of MQM. On the same day, they were presented
at a press briefing of the Paramilitary Rangers, which was also
televised nationally. Fabricated charges have been framed against
them and concocted stories were narrated in that press briefing.
It is strongly apprehended that they will be falsely implicated
in criminal cases and as in the past they will be brutally
tortured by the law enforcers to extract pre-written
"confessional statements". Undoubtedly, their case will
be referred to the Military Courts for sentencing them to death.
Those arrested are:
- Saleem Tajik 30, son of Abdul Hameed, resident of 5-L,
North Karachi, Karachi. He is a member of Muttahida
Organising Committee of MQM.
- Najm Ul Hasan 30, son of Mohammad Hussain, resident of
North Karachi, Karachi. He is a member of Muttahida
Organising Committee of MQM.
- Arshad Hussain 33, son of Syed Zahid Hussain, resident of
C-22/99 Khudadad Colony, Karachi. He is a member of
Muttahida Organising Committee of MQM.
- Shuja. He is a member of Muttahida Organising Committee
of MQM.
- Abdul Majeed 38, son of Abdul Hameed, resident of House
No. 108, Sector 7-C, Orangi Town, Karachi. He is a worker
of MQM Unit 130, Sector Orangi Town.

7 February 1999
The personnel of Jamshed Quarter Police Station had arrested
Mohammad Yunus a month ago. They did not report this incident to
his family. They came to know of his arrest through the
newspapers. Mohammad Yunus son of Mohammad Yaqub, is a resident
of Orangi Town, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 130, Sector
Orangi Town.
6 February 1999
- The personnel of Police raided the house of Anees in
Lyari, Karachi. In his absence they ransacked the house
and misbehaved with the family members. Anees is a Member
of MQM Lyari Sector Committee.
- At around 4 p.m., the personnel of Paramilitary Rangers
raided several houses of MQM workers and supporters in
Korangi and made arrests. Those who were arrested are: 1)
Mohammad Imran son of Mohammad Yaseen, 2) Saleem son of
Sami Uddin and 3) Abid.
5 February 1999
At around 1 a.m., the personnel of Anti Terrorist Wing led by
Raja Umer Khitab raided the residence of Fadan Rizvi. In his
absence they ransacked the house and molested the family members.
During the raid they brutally tortured his brother.
4 February 1999
- At around 3 a.m., the personnel of Police (heavily drunk)
raided the house of Nasir Jamal, Joint Incharge of MQM
Unit 89, Sector Landhi. In his absence they misbehaved
with the family members. They particularly threatened the
wife of Nasir Jamal that they would strip her naked and
force her to walk in the neighbourhood. They aimed their
weapons on the head of the four-year-old son of Nasir
Jamal.
- At around 2 a.m., heavy contingent of police led by
notorious SHO Azam Hayat, raided the residence of Naeem.
In his absence they arrested Shani, an MQM worker of Unit
164, Sector Liaquatabad, who was temporarily residing
there. They raiding party came in an Armoured Personnel
Carrier (APC) No. 521.
2 February 1999
- At around 2 a.m., the personnel of CIA Police and Jamshed
Quarter Police Station raided the residence of Zahid
Ahmed Sheikh and arrested him. Zahid Ahmed Sheikh 34, son
of Rasheed Ahmed Sheikh is a resident of Dastagir No. 15,
Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 103, Sector Shah
Faisal Colony. The raiding party ransacked the house,
molested the family members and threatened them to
divulge the whereabouts of MQM workers Ameer and Aziz.
Both Ameer and Aziz are the brother-in-laws of Zahid
Ahmed Sheikh.
28 January 1999
The personnel of CIA Saddar Police arrested Fayyaz Ahmed 32,
son of Abdul Ghaffar. He is a worker of MQM Unit 157, Sector
Liaquatabad. According to details, he was at the house of his
employer who had informed the Police of his presence. The CIA
Police raided the house and arrested him.
25 January 1999
At around 3 a.m., the personnel of Surjani Town Police Station
led by Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Shehzad raided the house of
Shabbir Ahmed and arrested him. Shabbir Ahmed is a resident of
House No. L-170, Surjani Town, Amarabad, Karachi. He is a member
of MQM Elders Wing.
18 January 1999
The personnel of Liaquatabad Police Station led by SHO Sarwar
alias Commando arrested Mohammad Yaseen while he was buying
clothes from the market. Mohammad Yaseen 18, son of Abdul Saleem,
is a resident of House No. 28/2 Liaquatabad, Karachi. He is a
supporter of MQM Unit 165, Sector Liaquatabad.
