QUESTIONS/ANSWERS

Answering questions raised by the international media, Mr. Altaf Hussain answered

that he would welcome the extradition request by the government of Pakistan because this would give him an opportunity to show the world what is happening in Pakistan, not only to Mohajirs, but to all the other ethno linguistic and religious minorities. He added that Pakistan will not dare ask for his extradition because Britain is a country where the rule of law prevails, and even Tony Blair cannot influence the courts here. British courts are not Kangaroo courts working for the Prime Minister.

To a question about MQM support, he replied that MQM is the third largest political party which has the support of over 25 million Mohajirs in Pakistan and over 40 million of the total population. If we are allowed to work unhindered throughout Pakistan, we would have the overwhelming support of the entire population.

To another question as to whether MQM has an alliance with the PPP, Mr. Hussain categorically denied that MQM has any such alliance. MQM announced the 4th of September as the date for a strike. Yesterday PPP declared that they will also strike on the 4th of September. The decision about any future alliance with PPP will be taken by the Central Co-ordination Committee. Party members will be consulted from Unit level upwards to reach a consensus.

Replying to a question about withdrawal from Kargil, Mr. Hussain said that the army

Spared Nawaz Sharif because he is from Punjab. Had Benazir Bhutto committed this act, she would have been forced to step down.

On the question of appealing against ATC decisions, Mr. Hussain stated that MQM would continue its struggle for justice to the end.
