AFTAB SHEIKH AND SHEIKH LIAQUAT HUSSAIN SHOULD BE TRANSFERRED TO HOSPITAL FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT – DR. IMRAN FAROOQ

London
29 April 2001

MQM Convenor Dr. Imran Farooq has condemned the treatment to MQM leaders in prison and has asked the government to transfer Aftab Ahmed Sheikh and Sheikh Liaquat Hussain to a hospital immediately for medical treatment.  They are both approaching eighty years of age and suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes.  Despite the order of Sindh High Court, both leaders have still not been shifted to a hospital for treatment.

Furthermore, they are not allowed to meet with their visiting family members.  This is a denial of prisoners basic rights and contrary to the Jail Manual.  He also highlighted the discriminatory treatment meted-out to MQM leaders whereas Peoples Party and ARD’s detainees are accommodated in self-contained banglows with all facilities.  Dr. Imran Farooq appealed to General Musharraf and human rights organisations to take serious notice of such discrimination and arrange for the transfer of MQM elders leaders to a hospital in Karachi for treatment.
