MQM HAS BEEN FORCED TO CLOSE DOWN ITS RELIEF CAMPS IN AZAD KASHMIR AND NWFP – MOHAMMAD ANWAR

London: 8th November 2005

Mr Mohammad Anwar, Member of the Central Co-ordination Committee of the MQM, Senior Co-ordinator International, Corporate Relations and Human Rights Affairs said that we would sadly like to inform the international community, NGO’s and human rights organisations that we have been forced to close down our relief camps in Azad Kashmir and NWFP because the armed International Jihadi terrorists of “Jamat-e-Islami” (JI) and their hooligans has started attacking our camps in many places, which were affected because of the worst earthquake occurred in these areas on 8th October 2005. Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan is the most notorious jihadi organisation, nationally and internationally, and is still the most favourite organisation of Pakistani Establishment. He further added that this jihadi organisation (JI) is provided with a license by the establishment of Pakistan to assassinate, kill, plunder and loot all the liberal, secular, democratic and enlightened forces of Pakistan.

Mr Mohammad Anwar stated that Jamat-e-Islami arrived in the earthquake affected areas only one-week ago whereas the MQM started its work soon after the 8th of October 2005, in the severely damaged areas. Since the arrival of Jamaat-e-Islami a week ago, they have started humiliating, harassing and torturing the relief workers of the MQM in the affected areas. The JI arrived in these areas three weeks after MQM established its camps and today they shot MQM workers with automatic weapons. Other workers were kidnapped and tortured. The armed terrorists of JI also looted all the relief goods from different camps of MQM, which was stored to distribute among the affected people.

Mr Mohammad Anwar said that the leaders and office bearers of MQM contacted all the relevant government officials including the President and the Prime Minister to provide protection to the workers and sympathisers of the MQM but no protection has so far been provided while the terrorist activities of JI continue to increase in intensity and two workers of MQM were kidnapped by these terrorists.

Mr Mohammad Anwar said that Muhammad Zubair Yunus Bhatti, the office bearer of Kunri Unit, Mirpurkhas Zone of MQM, southern Pakistan, who was one of the relief workers of Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir, relief base camp, was shot in his chest after being kidnapped and then he was thrown off from the hill. He was admitted in the local hospital where he was operated upon and his condition is still critical. Later on, the armed terrorists of JI in a double cabin van also kidnapped Adil, who is Kashmiri by origin and has joined the MQM relief team recently after observing the sincere relief activities of the MQM.

Mr Mohammad Anwar said that Adil was kidnapped; his hands were tied behind his back and blindfolded. He was taken to unknown place and tortured. The armed terrorists threatened him that you being Kashmiri, we are warning you to leave the MQM relief camp otherwise you have to face dire consequences. Later Adil was thrown nearby the relief camp of MQM in Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir. Along with this horrific incident, today on 8th November 2005, other more than two dozen relief workers of MQM were attacked, kidnapped and tortured by JI terrorists in different relief camps.

Mr Mohammad Anwar said that the MQM relief camps in Muzaffarabad and other areas including the MQM field hospitals were also attacked by the terrorists of JI and all the goods; medicines and other medical instruments were looted. As the workers, doctors and paramedical volunteers of MQM are unarmed and helpless and the authorities provide no protection to them, so the MQM leaders and workers had left with no choice but to abandon the relief activities in the affected areas to avoid any loss of life. All the leaders, workers, doctors, paramedical volunteers of MQM who were busy in relief activities in the affected areas have been asked to return to Islamabad by the consensus of the MQM Central Coordination Committee.

Concluding his statement, Mr Mohammad Anwar said that our soul and hearts are crying and with tears in our eyes we are abandoning the relief activities in Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir and the affected areas of NWFP, however, we will continue over relief activities through international organisations, NGOs and foreign human rights organisations and we will continue to help the victims of the earthquake affectees.

Mr Mohammad Anwar said that it is to be noted that these jihadi outfits of Jamaat-e-Islami were being supported by the West and the USA. Now the time has come that they must review with regards to supporting these jihadi outfits that have become monsters of the world.
