PRESS CONFERENCE

ELEMENTS THAT DO NOT WANT PEACE AND STABILITY TO TAKE ROOTS IN KARACHI
ARE BENT UPON HARMING SINCERE PEACE EFFORTS OF THE MQM

 KARACHI: 23RD JULY 2011
KHURSHEED BEGUM SECRETARIAT

Respect Journalists

The purpose of calling this press conference is to inform you about the details of the tragic incidents of the armed attacks at the houses in Malir, Khokhrapar and Landhi resulting in the deaths and injuries to over 30 of the MQM workers and sympathisers.

As you know it very well that more than fifty armed Haqiqi terrorists and criminals belonging to the gang war entered Khokhrapar, Ammar Yasir Society and other adjoining areas of Malir and started attacking the house of the MQM workers. They stormed into the house and fired indiscriminately on people sleeping in the houses and those who were coming out of their homes to go to their offices. More than 30 workers and supporters of the MQM were either injured or lost their lives as a result of heavy firing. It is to be noted that as soon as these terrorists, who were armed with latest automatic weapons, entered in Malir and Khokhrapar and started firing at the houses and the MQM offices in the area, the MQM officials contacted all the high government officials and informed them about the situation. They requested for immediate action against the terrorist but we are sorry to say that timely action was not taken to protect the innocent and unarmed workers, sympathisers and citizens in Malir. Terrorists armed with latest automatic weapons continued to move in Malir and Khokhrapar without any let or hindrance for several hours. They continued to attack the houses of the MQM workers and party offices and innocent MQM workers and sympathisers fell victim to the brazen terrorism one after another. The terrorists had a heyday but the police was nowhere to be seen. Likewise armed terrorists penetrated into Unit 89 of the MQM in Landhi Colony No 1 and attacked several places. The gravity of the situation can be judged from the fact that these terrorists used hand grenades as well. These criminal elements disappeared from the scene only when the Rangers entered into Malir, Khokhrapar and Landhi.

Respected Journalists

The impunity with which the terrorists struck has brought back the memories of 19th June 1992. In the same manner innocent and unarmed citizens were attacked by the terrorists for four continuous days resulting in the deaths and injuries of over 100 MQM workers and sympathisers. Again the law-enforcing agencies were nowhere to be seen. This also awakened the memories of December 1986. We condemn this naked terrorism in the strongest possible words and believe that the criminal elements who caused bloodshed of innocent MQM workers and sympathisers and terrorized the areas of Malir and Khokhrapar are open enemies of Karachi. These terrorists are playing in the hands of certain people and spilling the blood of guiltless people. They want to spoil peace of the city in order to fulfil their wicked designs.

Respected Journalists

As you know it very well that a provincial minister had met the head of the Haqiqi terrorists in Karachi Central Jail on 11th July. This minister not only admitted to this meeting in a highly provocative speech in Karachi after two days but also called the head of the Haqiqi terrorists as the true leader of the Muhajirs and announced his full support for him. We had expressed our apprehensions at that time as well that a terrorist attack could be made against the MQM similar to 19th June 1992. The manner in which the heavily armed criminal elements attacked the houses of MQM workers and tried to forcefully occupy party offices of the MQM, their free movement in the area without any fear of the law and the role of the silent spectators played by police and the administration, has forced us to believe that this was all done under a well-planned scheme. The terrorists were given full time to do their part.

Respected Journalists

The MQM is a democratic political party that respects the mandate and political ideologies of all religious and political parties. The MQM believes that all parties should have complete freedom to propagate their political ideologies to the people. But the MQM was resolutely against the attempts to facilitate the criminal elements in capturing an area with the power of the gun yesterday and the MQM would even today stand in the way of any such attempts. Such tactics came to nothing in the past as well and they will not be useful even today.

The MQM wants peace in Sindh particularly in Karachi and it is making sincere efforts for it. It is only for the sake of peace and stability that we took back the resignation of Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad. Mr Altaf Hussain is holding out the hand of friendship to Pakistan People’s Party, Awami National Party, Pakistan Muslim League (N), JUI (F) and all other religious and political parties in all sincerity for the sake of peace and stability and for promoting brotherhood among all segments of the society. He has made an impassioned appeal to the leaders and workers of all the parties to rise above political differences and work for bringing peace by embracing each other. It is unfortunate that the elements that do not want peace and stability to flourish in Karachi are bent upon harming our sincere efforts of peace and tranquillity by making the MQM workers victims of terrorists’ attacks.

Respected Journalists

We are a peace-loving people and we reiterate our proposal that we are ready to support every effort aimed at bringing peace and stability, brotherhood and harmony among all the segments of society living in Karachi. But do not sabotage our sincere efforts. We appeal to President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Provincial Home Minister Manzoor Wassan to ensure that the bloodshed of the MQM workers and sympathisers is stopped in order to restore durable peace and stability in Karachi. The elements responsible for attacks in Malir and Khokhrapar, who played are involved in the bloodbath of the MQM workers and sympathisers, should be arrested and no leniency should be shown to those who are destroying peace and tranquillity of the city.

We believe that peace cannot be restored unless the criminal elements are brought to book. Hence all efforts for bringing peace and stability in the city would fail because the criminals had the tacit support of some government ministers. As long as the criminals continued to enjoy the support, all efforts for peace are bound to fail.

Through this press conference we express our heartfelt sympathies to the family members of the MQM workers and sympathisers who were killed in the terrorists’ attack. We also express our solidarity with the people of Malir and Landhi. We also appeal to the citizens of Karachi, particularly the workers of the MQM to maintain peace at every cost and not get provoked by the terrorism of anti-peace elements.
