MQM DECIDES TO SIT ON OPPOSITION BENCHES IN SENATE AND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

2ND JANUARY 2011:

The Co-ordination Committee of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) has decided that MQM will sit on opposition benches in the Senate and National Assembly. MQM Founder and Leader Mr Altaf Hussain has ratified the decision of the Co-ordination Committee. In a joint meeting of the Co-ordination Committee in London and Karachi in which MQM Senators and MNAs and MPAs also participated, the overall political and economic situation obtaining in the country came under detailed discussion. The meeting condemned Highly Inflated prices of petrol, diesel, and kerosene oil and noted with concern that the poor and middle class people were already faced with misery and hardships, labourers are finding it difficult to meet both ends. It was said in the meeting that the situation has deteriorated to such an extent that poor people were being forced to sell their children.

“The fresh increment in the prices of POL products at the onset of the New Year is not only unjust but is tantamount to cruelty. With the increase in POL prices transport fares and prices of other essential commodities are on the rise which has broken the back of the people and their economic problems have been compounded all the more. On the one hand government is imposing indirect taxes on the people and on the other hand mini budgets are being introduced in the shape of increase in prices on almost daily basis.”

The meeting said that while increase in oil prices in the international market was being cited as a reason for increasing oil prices but no effort was being made to improve the economic condition of the country by bringing the agricultural income of feudal lords and big landed-estates under the tax net and plugging unbridled corruption. “The rich people have been virtually exempted from paying tax and the salaried class is facing the ever increasing tax burden.”

The meeting noted with serious concern the escalation in the incidents of kidnapping for ransom, extortion, terrorism and robberies and the deteriorating law and order situation in the Sindh and other parts of country.

It was said in the meeting that MQM was a political party that took important decisions on the aspirations of the people. “Its representatives feel themselves accountable before the public as they lived in their midst. Pressure is mounting on the elected representatives because of the increase in POL prices. In these situations MQM considers it impossible to sit on the treasury benches hence we would sit on the opposition benches in the Senate and National Assembly. Nonetheless we will continue to support positive steps of the government, but openly oppose all those steps that go against the interest of the people.

The meeting demanded the government to take back the increase in oil prices immediately and control the prices. Unjust taxation should stop forthwith and the agricultural income of feudal lords should be taxed and corruption stopped. It also demanded that to recover money from those who had usurped big loans from banks.
